Mitchell represented the United States as an elite fencer while attending Harvard. On paper, everything seemed great. But the reality of balancing Olympic-level training with a full course load at one of the hardest schools in the country broke him down.
He was completely dependent on caffeine. Sleep was horrible. Hormones were out of whack. Energy was gone and his physique was trash. Even at the Olympic level with the best coaches, he couldn't brute force his way through it. That's when he realized: if effort alone could fix this, it would have worked already.
